Things you should know when attending a Sikh wedding

So you have got a to a Sikh wedding and you are already making plans for that flamboyant affair. But wait a minute, read on and you might be in for a surprise as we take you through small details that must be kept in mind when attending a Sikh wedding. While it is true that the weddings of this community are known to be an amalgamation of crazy dancing, mouth-watering food and drinks, the main wedding called Anand Karaj is a very simple and sober ceremony. So though you can have all the fun in pre and post-wedding programmes, hold your horses at the main wedding ritual.

The main wedding usually takes place at a Gurudwara where a priest presides the entire ceremony. By rule man and women sit separately with their heads covered even if you are a man. So it is advisable to carry a handkerchief big enough to cover your head at all times. Also guests and the couple are expected to sit on the floor in Gurudwara. Remember never to point your feet towards the Guru Granth Sahib- the Holy book of Sikhs. For women it is strongly recommended that they should wear something conservative. Usually you would find ladies in Salwar kurta and dupatta on their heads at the Gurudwara. Talking is prohibited during the ceremony keeping up the basic courtesy and etiquettes of a place of worship.

It is also imperative to mention that shoes are not allowed inside the precincts of the Gurudwara. After the wedding, a spread of simple food is served at the langar as Prasad. All the guests are required to sit on the floor mats during this feast. The food is vegetarian and comprises of daal, sabzi, roti and halwa. The halwa is called Karah Prasad and is a typical dessert that is served in the Gurudwara. Cut to post-wedding party and reception, you will see hundreds of colours and a crazy after-party with lots of dance, food and drinks.
