One of the wedding rituals is the Istikhara where special consent to perform the wedding is taken from Allah by a religious head. Post the consent, the groom’s family visit the bride and exchange gifts or Imam-Zamin where they offer a silver or gold coin tied in a silk cloth. This coin is tied to the hand of the bride and this ritual is known as Imam-Zamin ceremony. This ceremony is followed by the Mangni ceremony where the betrothed couple exchange rings. are sent to friends and families seeking their presence in the function.
Post the Mangni, Muslims observe the Manjha ceremony which is similar to Haldi ceremony in Hindu wedding. Mehndi Ceremony is the ritual that follows the Manjha ritual and it is done just before the marriage. In this ceremony, henna designs are applied to the hands and feet of the bride in order to beautify her for the wedding. After that, the Sanchaq ritual is observed where the groom’s family sends clothes and jewelleries for the bride which she wears at the Nikah and Chauthi.
A procession of Baraatis start out for the bride on the wedding. As they reach the venue, they are welcomed by the family of the bride and the groom shares a glass of sweet drink with his brother-in-law. During the Nikaah ceremony, two religious heads are present whi represent the two families. The amount of Mehar, a compulsory amount of money to be offered to the bride by the groom’s family is discussed. In the Nikaah ceremony, the Maulavi seeks the consent of the bride thrice to accept the groom as her husband.
After her consent, the groom is asked in a similar fashion regarding his acceptance of the marriage. After his consent, the Nikahnama is signed by the couple and is succeeded by the recital of Khutba, a religious discourse.
